If ever there was an example of following the road less traveled, surely my life is it. In conventional terms, I can’t imagine anyone was ever less suited to run for political office.

I moved to Fort Myers with my family at the age of four in 1973. With the exception of time spent traveling and working abroad, I’ve maintained residence in Southwest Florida almost ever since.

After high school, I enlisted in the US Army in 1987 as an Electronic Intelligence Analyst, and served for three years mostly spent stationed in Germany as the Berlin Wall fell. It was at that time that I felt my first real pangs of political conscience as I watched the flood of Eastern refugees pouring into the West. I watched the façade of the iron curtain come down, I realized the profound folly of ideological obstinateness.

Two days after my first enlistment ended, Iraq invaded Kuwait, and I voluntarily reenlisted for the Gulf War but soon found myself in South Korea along the DMZ instead. As I did in Europe, I took advantage of the opportunity there to travel around Asia and Australia. In 1993, after my time in the Army, I continued traveling around the Mediterranean from Rome through Greece, with the trip culminating in Israel.

Eventually, I returned home to Southwest Florida and completed vocational training in Electronic and Computer technologies. My time traveling served me well as I ended up in the middle of the Internet boom of the Late 90s working for a German/American technology company, setting up wireless networks across North America, South America, Europe, and Africa. Rapidly working my way up to US Director of Operations, and later to Assistant to the CEO, I found myself in a unique position of working for a scrupulous company at the center of one of the worst frenzies of corporate greed in modern history.

As the twenty-first century dawned, I decided to take my life in a different direction and self-published A StoryBook in 2000, and later founded Daylight Moon Productions Inc, a small television production operation here in Southwest Florida. After over ten years of studying Sufism and Islam, I watched the collision course between America and the Islamic world that began with the tragedy of 9-11 from a knowing perspective. In 2003, I decided to officially become a Moslem not only because that was where my faith and experience naturally led, but also because I recognized the need for more individuals to help bridge the cultural divide. In 2004, Daylight Moon Productions traveled to Damascus, Syria to Shoot Islam: Seekers of Knowledge which later aired nationally on BridgesTV in 2005.

All of this may seem like the most unlikely path to office possible. On paper I probably seem like the least qualified person to sit in congress, but I’ve always found that real knowledge and experience don’t always come from the most conventional sources. Sometimes, following the same predictable types of leaders over and over again leads to the same predicable messes. When that happens, it seems to me that the most sensible thing to do would be to look elsewhere for solutions.
